Promising Sri Lankan spinner Dunith Wellalage scripted history on Tuesday, as he recorded a spectacular fifer against India in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023. The left-arm off spinner wreaked havoc in the Indian camp, rattling their batting order through an incredible spell. He finished his ten-over spell with impressive figures of five for 40, registering the record for the second best bowling performance for Sri Lanka against India in ODI Asia Cups.

Best bowling performance for SL against IND in Asia Cup

  • Ajantha Mendis- 6/13
  • Dunith Wellalage- 5/40
  • Farveez Maharoof- 5/42
  • KIW Wijegunawardene- 4/49
  • RJ Ratnayake- 3/24

After opting to bat first, India got off to a flying start, thanks to a scintillating opening stand between Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. While Sharma struck a flamboyant fifty, Gill became Wellalage's first victim for 19 runs.

The young spinner jolted India with two massive blows, dismissing Sharma and Virat Kohli in quick succession. However, KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan steadied the Indian ship, stitching a crucial stand for the fourth wicket. But unfortunately for the Men in Blue, Wellalage turned out to be their nemesis once yet again, dismissing Rahul before completing his fifer with Hardik Pandya's wicket.

Riding on exceptional spells from Wellalage and Charith Asalanka, India are down on the mat, reeling at 186 for nine, with Axar Patel and Mohammed Siraj batting on 7* and 0*, respectively.
