Dunith Wellalage, the 20-year-old leg-spin sensation from Sri Lanka, has recently grabbed the cricketing world's attention with a remarkable performance in the Asia Cup 2023. In the on-going match against India's formidable batting lineup, Wellalage displayed exceptional skills, earning figures of 5-40 in his ten-over spell and dismissing the Indian superstars in Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya.

Born on January 9, 2003, in Colombo, Wellalage is just 20 years old. He has studied at St. Joseph's College in Colombo and represented the Jaffna Kings in the Lanka Premier League. While his international career is still in its early stages, Wellalage has shown promise at both the U-19 and senior levels. He has played one Test match and 12 ODIs.

Shifting the focus to the game, Wellalage's spectacular spell began with the dismissal of Shubman Gill, one of India's most promising young talents.

Bowling from round the wicket, Wellalage produced a drifting delivery that enticed Gill into a forward defensive stroke. The ball spun sharply, eluding Gill's bat and hitting the top of the off-stump, leaving the young batsman bewildered. The crowd at R. Premadasa Stadium erupted in approval as Gill departed after contributing 19 runs.

He then moved on to the most prized scalp for him and that was none other than the Virat Kohli, fresh off a century in the previous game King Kohli was definitely high on confidence. But the Lankan youngster continued to exploit the conditions, altering his length to make the ball grip the surface.

Kohli, known for his impeccable batting, struggled to control a flick shot, chipping it straight to mid-wicket, where Dasun Shanaka completed the catch.

That didn't stop him, he also took the wicket of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma. Employing his left-arm orthodox spin, Wellalage delivered an arm ball that surprised Rohit Sharma, ending a record-breaking knock at. 53.

He also went on further, to take two more big wickets of Team India KL Rahul 39 (44) and Hardik Pandya 5 (18). Wellalage's pace variation makes him incredibly hard for batters to read and this made him unstoppable today against Rohit Sharma & Co., quite literally.
