Mike Hesson Questions RCB's Decision To Acquire Cameron Green For IPL 2024

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) grabbed much headlines at the IPL 2024 auction with bold new recruitments.

The franchise strengthened its overseas pace arsenal by acquiring Alzarri Joseph, Tom Curran, and Lockie Ferguson. They also bolstered their local reserves with Yash Dayal and Saurav Chauhan.

However, belligerent Australian all-rounder Cameron Green continues to be RCB's hottest IPL 2024 deal. Prior to the auction, RCB shelled out a staggering amount of Rs. 17.50 crore to rope in the all-rounder in an all-cash deal from Mumbai Indians.

RCB's former Director of Cricket, Mike Hesson, has now questioned the current team management for making such a hefty deal, as it apparently made a huge difference to their auction strategy.

Mike Hesson questions RCB’s Cameron Green move

Mike Hesson believes RCB's hefty investment in Cameron Green disrupted their IPL 2024 auction planning. He claimed that during his time as director of cricket, the franchise used to enter any auction event with huge purses as they used to release several of their players during the retention window.

However, Hesson praised Cameron Green's abilities as an all-rounder but added that acquiring him for such a huge sum made a difference to team management's strategy. During an interview with cricket.com, he said:

“We’ve been in auctions where we have bullied other teams. We were able to get ourselves into that position by releasing players. But I thought after the retention list, RCB were in a really strong position. And then they spent ₹17 crore on Cam Green. Cam Green is a fine player, but his buy made a huge difference to their auction strategy.”

Green made his IPL debut in 2023 for the Mumbai Indians franchise. Featuring in 16 matches, the cricketer bludgeoned 452 runs at a blistering strike rate of over 160. Green also harvested six timely wickets through his medium pace.

The 24-year-old Australian cricketer is set to join the likes of Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis, Mohammed Siraj as well as his national teammate Glenn Maxwell at the RCB camp for the IPL 2024 season. Here is a look at RCB’s entire squad for the much-awaited competition
