In an unnecessary need of urgency, Shubman Gill threw away his wicket in the final session of Day 2 of the fifth Test between India and Australia. The team needed composure after Virat Kohli’s wicket, but Gill’s counterattack plan backfired as he edged to wicket-keeper Alex Carey, resulting in an embarrassing dismissal.

Shubman Gill, who replaced India captain Rohit Sharma for SCG Test, failed to score runs in the first innings as he was dismissed on 20 runs by Nathan Lyon. He repeated a similar mistake in the second innings, as unnecessary aggression resulted in an ugly dismissal.

India was 59/3 after Virat Kohli once again found an edge to Scott Boland’s outside off-stump delivery. Steve Smith’s clean catch at slips possibly ended Kohli’s last inning on Australian soil.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill was tasked to weather the final hour of the third session and avoid the fall of more wickets. However, Gill lost his concentration and ended up committing a major blunder.

Shubman Gill deceived by debutant Webster

Beau Webster, the debutant, delivered a seemingly harmless delivery, but Gill, in an unusual attempt to charge down the track against the seamer, ended up with an inside edge. The ball deflected sharply, and Alex Carey, showing sharp reflexes, dived to his left to complete a brilliant catch.

The dismissal was instigated out of desperation, and Gill played a reckless shot when caution was needed. The square-leg umpire confirmed the catch carried cleanly, leaving Gill no option but to walk back. With that, India were four wickets down with just 78 runs on the board.

Gill once again wasted a decent start. He was batting on 13 off 15 balls. However, unnecessary aggression and miscues in short selection ruined not only his start but also India’s hopes of winning the game.

India currently has a lead of over 100 runs the game. However, to tackle Australia, they must need more runs. Moreover, Jasprit Bumrah's further participation in the game is uncertain which is a nightmarish situation for the Indian cricket team.
