England Test captain Ben Stokes had a brain-fade moment moments before the umpires called for Lunch on the last day of the Ashes 2023 at the Oval. Off the bowling of Moeen Ali, Steve Smith gloved the ball that lobed towards the leg slip, but to make a mess.

The whole drama unfolded in the 66th over of the fourth innings, when Smith could not judge the bounce and drift behind the delivery as he gloved it towards the English captain, who timed his jump to perfection but could not hold onto the catch for enough time.

Smith's dismissal could shift all the odds in England's favour in the series finale, but the Australian again had luck his way in the series. 

The on-field umpire, Joel Wilson, gave the batter not-out. However, the Three Lions challenged the decision and went upstairs, but for nothing, as the TV umpire Nitin Menon examined all the replays to ask Wilson to stay with his original decision.

Earlier in the day, magical spells from Chris Woakes and Mark Wood reduced the visitors from 140-0 to 169-3 as another Aussie collapse seemed on the cards. However, Smith got accompanied by Travis Head to help Australia get back into the game.

At lunchtime, the visiting team need 146 runs to bag the series with a scoreline of 3-1; meanwhile, Stokes and co. will need to have a final push if they want to end the ties at 2-2.
