The heroic stand put up by the Australian openers - David Warner and Usman Khawaja - ended with Chris Woakes' high-quality seam bowling, who removed both the openers in his successive overs to bring England back in the game.

After the penultimate day of the Oval Test ended with Australia needing 249 runs to win, Woakes and Stuart Broad began the day with tight lines and lengths, which stopped the run-flow for the chasing team.

The umpires changed the old ball, which also helped in England's favour.

Nevertheless, Woakes dismissed both the batters with same game-plan, bowling from over the wicket and making the ball talk off the track to dismantle Warner and Khawaja early in the first session of the last day.

For Warner, the ball tailed away the required much as it took his outside edge, before Jonny Bairstow pouched it safely and sending the southpaw back to the hut 60.

Soon followed, Khawaja - who misjudged the line of the ball - went on the back foot and get the ball trapped in front of the leg stump.

The speedster Mark Wood also joined the party for England as he provided the third breakthrough of the session and innings, getting rid of Marnus Labuschagne, reducing Australia to 169-3 after 49 overs.

Labuschagne could not handle Wood's hard length delivery and he knicked it to Zak Crawley, stationed at the second slip.

After losing three quick wickets, Steve Smith and Travis Head took the cautious approach, and stitched a brilliant partnership for the visitors. At the time of writing, the Aussies required 174 runs to win, while England will look to scalp seven more wickets to end the series at 2-2.
