Since its inception, the Indian Premier League has established itself as the most lucrative T20 tournament in the world. Besides giving a huge platform to budding talents, the IPL has served as a rich source of entertainment, with several legendary cricketers setting the stage on fire.

From Chris Gayle to AB de Villiers, the list is pretty long if we start naming the IPL greats. But amid the dynamism of Rohit Sharma and shrewd tactics of MS Dhoni, an Indian player who has earned billions of admirers is Virat Kohli.

The talismanic cricketer has been a force to reckon with the bat for India across formats. If we talk about the IPL, Kohli has been a mainstay for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, one of the most talked about teams in the tournament.

However, despite his batting brilliance over the years, there are a few reasons why RCB shouldn't retain the legendary cricketer for the IPL next season.

No room for anchors in T20Is anymore?

There was a time when Virat Kohli used to be rated highly as a T20I batter. The veteran cricketer played a pivotal role for India, exhibiting his incredible batting attributes in multiple T20 World Cup editions.

Be it his gutsy knock against Pakistan at the Eden Gardens or fireworks in a must-win clash versus Australia in Mohali, Kohli always proved his mettle for the Men in Blue at the highest level.

However, the T20 format has evolved, demanding a more aggressive brand of cricket from the current generation of players. In such a scenario, Kohli, who generally takes a little bit of time before taking off, is no longer the kind of a swashbuckler a team needs to succeed in T20s.

IPL trophy still missing in RCB's cabinet

After leading the Indian team to under-19 World Cup glory, Virat Kohli entered the IPL as one of the most exciting young prospects. He was purchased by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and has continued to serve them with distinction.

However, despite all his valiant attempts as a batter and skipper, Kohli hasn't been able to ensure an IPL trophy for RCB, as the coveted title has eluded the franchise for seventeen years.

Keeping Kohli's brand value aside, it makes little sense to retain him if RCB buys another player to lead the side besides having him at a whopping price.

So, it's high time RCB should think beyond Kohli's enormous brand value and focus on bringing results on the field.

Form a new core after the auction

Whenever a team approaches the IPL mega auction, it should look at building a core for the next few seasons. The auction gives every team a chance to spend their money wisely and cover every aspect of the game to form a solid combination.

So, it would be a feasible move for RCB to release Kohli and bring some fresh faces to add a whole new dimension to their team.

After releasing him, they can form a new leadership group, having someone else at the helm. This significant change in the decision-making group might work wonders for the perennial underachievers.
