On Monday, December 2, India locked horns against Japan in their 2nd group stage match of Under-19 Asia Cup 2024. In the ongoing match, India, batting first, got off to a brilliant start courtesy of Ayush Mhatre and Vaibhav Suryavanshi.
The openers stitched a 65-run stand for the first wicket but the Boys In Blue lost two quick wickets and it put them in a state of panic. Nonetheless, Ayush did his job and shone with the bat with a brilliant fifty.
Mhatre Shines Against Japan
Mhatre scored a quickfire 54 off 29 balls that featured six fours and four sixes. He was in full control of his shots and looked comfortable from the first ball.
Mhatre Knocks On Selectors' Doors With Brilliant Fifty
Mhatre showed a glimpse of his potential in the first game against Pakistan, when he played a few classy shots, but couldn't convert the start into a big score. The 17-year-old has risen through the ranks in the last few years and is knocking on selectors' doors.
By December 2023, he had made it to Mumbai's Under-23 squad for the CK Nayudu Trophy and was also named in MCA's Under-19 team of the year for 2023-24. However, he failed to get a bid in the recently concluded IPL auction.
It is worth noting that CSK and MS Dhoni, in particular, were impressed with Mhatre's skills as he can bowl too. However, the five-times winners did not bid for the India U-19 opener. Talking about the ongoing match, India U19 are 206/3 after 31.4 overs.
