Indian leg-spinner Asha Sobhana picked up her maiden ODI wicket by dismissing South Africa’s all-round giant Marizanne Kapp in the first match of the three-game series between the two teams.

Being tasked to bowl the 15th over of the South African innings in Bengaluru, Sobhana struck in the fourth over of her spell with the assistance of captain Harmanpreet Kaur at cover region.

Asha Sobhana picks up maiden ODI wicket

Asha Sobhana, who recently made her T20I debut for Team India, received her first ODI cap on June 16 in Bengaluru for India’s series-opening match against the visiting South Africans.

Defending 266 runs for a win, Indian bowlers Renuka Singh, Pooja Vastrakar and Deepti Sharma all claimed a wicket each in their opening spells to reduce the visitors to just 33-3. With an aim to lead South Africa’s recovery while batting at number five, dashing all-rounder Marizanne Kapp punched out a boundary and a six to reach 24* at one stage of the run-chase.

However, Kapp’s rebellious charge was eventually halted by debutant Asha Sobhana, who deceived the South African veteran with a full and wide delivery towards the off-stump. The South African batter, attempting to crash the Indian spinner towards the boundary, merely managed to find the ‘Women in Blue’ skipper Harmanpreet Kaur at cover.

Remarkably, Asha Sobhana added three more wickets to her tally by mopping up the South African tail to finish with match-winning figures of 4-21 on her ODI debut. The cricketer accounted for the dismissals of Masabata Klaas, Nonkululeko Mlaba and Ayabonga Khaka in the space of just seven deliveries as the entire Proteas batting line-up crumbled at 122 to hand India a 143-run win.

The two teams will now collide in the second ODI match on June 19 at the same Bengaluru-based venue.
