The Indian Women’s team thumped their South African counterparts by 143 runs at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 16 to take a 1-0 lead in their three-match ODI series.

Smriti Mandhana steadies India to 265-8

Winning the toss and opting to bat first, India lost opener Shafali Verma in the fourth over of the match to South Africa’s new-ball seamer Masabata Klaas. Number three Dayalan Hemalatha (12 off 16 balls) and captain Harmanpreet Kaur (10 off 11 balls) also failed to capitalise on their starts by crumbling in front of Nonkululeko Mlaba and Annerie Dercksen respectively as the ‘Women in Blue’ slipped to 55-3 in 11.2 overs.

With Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh failing to lead India’s recovery, dashing opener Smriti Mandhana steadied team’s faltering ship with an attacking 81-run partnership with all-rounder Deepti Sharma. Their defiant stand was eventually broken through by Ayabonga Khaka at 180-6, before Mandhana notched up her sixth ODI century to take India past the 200-run mark.

Mandhana’s imperial 117 and 31 useful runs from unbeaten Pooja Vastrakar at the death ensured Team India secured a 265-run finish at the end of their 50 overs.

With the ball fresh, hard and new; India’s opening speedsters Renuka Singh and Pooja Vastrakar both struck early to get rid of South African captain Laura Wolvaardt (4 off four balls) and number three Anneke Bosch (five off 13 balls) respectively at 21-2.

In a chase of 266, spinners Deepti Sharma and Radha Yadav blitzed through South Africa’s middle-over by collecting three wickets between them. Sharma herself accounted for the key scalps of opener Tazmin Brits and a well-set Sune Luus for 33.

India’s ODI debutant Asha Sobhana, meanwhile, celebrated the occasion with four wickets, including that of legendary all-rounder Marizanne Kapp to finish with figures of 4-21. South Africa’s entire response came down crumbling at 122 in 37.4 overs to fall 143 runs short of their target, thus handing a Harmanpreet Kaur-led India a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

The two teams will now collide in the second ODI match of the month-long tour at the same Bengaluru-based venue on June 19.
