The Barbados Royals and the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots played a thriller in the ninth game of the CPL 2024. The match was hosted at Warner Park in St. Kitts.

The pitch at Warner Park has so far provided a batting paradise in the tournament. However, this game between the Royals and the Patriots turned out to be moderately scoring. The Patriots batted first after they lost the toss.

Patriots posted a fighting total despite early disaster

With Evin Lewis, Andre Fletcher, and Kyle Mayers scoring silver ducks, the Patriots were 0/3 within the first eight deliveries. However, after this, Wanindu Hasaranga and Mikyle Louis stabilised the ship. The duo stitched an 82-run partnership and brought sanity into the innings.

However, the Royals once again picked up three wickets in quick succession and made a roaring comeback into the game. Brilliant efforts from Ryan John and Josh Clarkson got the Patriots to a fighting total of 153/8 at the end of their 20 overs.

Dunith Wellalage fought the battle for the Royals

The Royals did not get the ideal start in the chase. They lost Rahkeem Cornwall in the second delivery of the innings and were under pressure. Soon, Quinton de Kock was dismissed despite getting a good start, and the Royals' miseries increased.

Dunith Wellalage decided to show resilience for the Royals. The Sri Lankan all-rounder, along with the other batters in the middle order, pushed the team towards the target. He had a good partnership with the Royals skipper, Rovman Powell. They stitched 49 runs and kept the team in the game.

Rovman Powell was beaten by change in pace

Wellalage fell to a brilliant fielding effort by Rutherford in the 17th over. After this, the onus was on Powell to take the team home. But Anrich Nortje soon accounted for the West Indian skipper. On the last delivery of the 17th over, Nortje bowled a fullish pace-on delivery around the off and middle line. Powell was left wanting for a time as he was caught off-guard after a slower delivery of the previous ball. The Royals skipper only managed to chop on the ball to his stumps and walked back to the pavilion.

Even though the Patriots had the match in their grip, they failed to close it down. Jason Holder played a useful cameo, and Nyeem Young finished off the game with a maximum on the second-last delivery of the innings.
