Uganda's captain, Brian Masaba, won the toss and chose to bowl first against Papua New Guinea in their T20 World Cup Group C match at Providence Stadium on Wednesday, June 6, 2024.

Uganda's choice to bowl first after winning the toss seemed to pay off initially. Their bowlers performed impressively, restricting PNG to a low score of 77 all out.

However, Uganda's batting lineup encountered significant hurdles early in their innings. The loss of opener Simon Ssesazi in the second over was a major setback.

In the second over of their innings, opener Simon Ssesazi faced a delivery from PNG bowler Alei Nao. The delivery was a good-length ball aimed at the leg stump line. The Uganda opener attempted to punch it towards mid-on but misjudged the line and played down the wrong line. As a result, he missed the ball, which went on to hit his pad.

The bowler, Alei Nao, appealed for an LBW decision, and the umpire upheld the appeal. The Uganda batter decided to review the decision, hoping that there might have been an inside edge or that the ball might have been missing the stumps.

However, the UltraEdge technology indicated a flat line, showing no contact with the bat. The ball-tracking technology then confirmed that the delivery was hitting the stumps, with all three red indicators.

Given the early setbacks and the pressure of a World Cup match, the team was not able to regroup and stabilise their innings to have a chance at chasing down the target set by PNG.

They find themselves in a critical condition as the key middle-order failed and was not able to provide the required momentum. But with significant contributions from Riazat Ali Shah (33 runs off 56 balls) Uganda won their first T20 World Cup match by 3 wickets.
