Pakistan's legacy of producing world-class fast bowlers seems to be a never ending story, with new talents consistently emerging on the international stage. The latest instance of such promising talent is left-arm pacer Akif Javed, who made his international debut against New Zealand in the first ODI on Saturday.
The 24 years old wasted no time as he made an immediate impact, claiming his maiden ODI wicket within the powerplay. He started the proceedings with the new ball alongside Naseem Shah and kept New Zealand in check, not allowing them to free their arms or build any momentum early in the innings.
Akif Javed's Debut Breakthrough
After a couple of tight overs up front, Akif claimed his maiden ODI wicket in the second delivery of his third over, dismissing Kiwi opener Nick Kelly. He bowled 137.7 kph on a good length. And Kelly, looking to drive, mistimed his shot, allowing the ball to go through the gap between his bat and pad, crashing into the stumps.
New Zealand went on to finish the powerplay with 36 for 2 as Pakistan got off to a great start with Akif having a memorable start to his international career with another wicket later in the innings. However, New Zealand did manage to bounce back, posting a formidable total of 344 runs on the board. Mark Chapman was the star with the bat for the Kiwis, who played a brilliant knock, scoring a magnificent century.
Akif Javed's Heroics Not Enough as Pakistan Falls Short
Despite Akif Javed's brilliance with the ball, his efforts couldn't save Pakistan from a daunting chase. New Zealand's 344-run total proved to be a lot difficult for the visitors as Pakistan’s batting lineup struggled to build big partnerships.
Although Akif's performance with the ball was worth taking a note, Pakistan batting struggle after the Champions Trophy debacle has just gotten worse. Eventually, New Zealand managed to bowl Pakistan out for 271 and won the first ODI of the three-match series by 73 runs.
