In a not-so-pleasant surprise for Pakistan fans, Haris Rauf suffered a muscular sprain in his lower chest wall during Pakistan’s tri-series match against New Zealand on February 8. Though the injury isn’t serious, the star pacer has been rested as a precaution.

He’ll skip Pakistan’s crucial clash against South Africa on February 12, raising some eyebrows regarding his availability for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. But Rauf is expected to recover in time for the big tournament starting February 19.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s management has called up Akif Javed to replace Haris Rauf. So, who exactly is this Akif Javed? Let’s take a closer look

Who Is Akif Javed?

Akif Javed might not be a household name yet but the 24-year-old has been quietly making waves in Pakistan’s domestic circuit. Known for his pace and ability to swing the ball both ways, Akif is a genuine wicket-taker who loves a challenge. His numbers in First-Class, List A, and T20 cricket are mighty impressive.

In First-Class cricket, Akif Javed has snagged 52 wickets in 23 matches at an average of 43.53 with his best haul being 4/67. He has been particularly effective in List A cricket where he has bagged 33 wickets in 30 matches with a best of 5/60.

But his numbers truly stand apart in the shortest format. In T20 cricket, Akif has been an exceptional performer with 84 wickets in 68 matches at an average of 23.53 and an economy rate of 8.23.

Akif Javed's Heroics For Rangpur Riders In Bangladesh Premier League

What really has brought him in the mix is his performance in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2024-25 recently. Playing for Rangpur Riders, Akif was in magnificent form as he grabbed 20 wickets in just 11 matches at a sensational average of 14.30. His economy rate of 6.89 and best figures of 4/32 show just how lethal he can be in the middle overs.

With Pakistan’s knockout match against South Africa looming on February 12, all eyes will be on Akif Javed. The stakes are high and this is no ordinary debut opportunity. It’s a chance for him to show he belongs on the big stage.

Pakistan’s bowling attack will need firepower in Haris Rauf’s absence, and Akif could be the x-factor they need to seal a spot in the final against New Zealand on February 14.
