Pakistan set an unwanted record [Source: @ABsay_ek/X.COM]
As expected, Pakistan were taken to the cleaners in the first ODI of the series by the New Zealand team on Saturday. The visitors had already lost the T20Is, but had a golden chance to redeem themselves in the ODI series, but things didn't go according to their plans at the McLean Park, Napier.
Pakistan bag an unwanted ODI record
The visitors needed 345 runs to win the match, and barring Babar Azam and Agha Salman, who scored their respective fifties, the other failed to contribute in the match as the Men in Green lost the contest by 73 runs. Apart from the batters, their bowlers also had an off-day and set an unwanted record in the embarrassing defeat.
The Men in Green conceded 43 extras, including byes and leg byes and this marked their third-highest extras conceded in an ODI innings. Pakistan's record for conceding the most extras in an ODI innings also came up against the Kiwis in 1999, followed by 44 extras against Sri Lanka (1990) and New Zealand (2003).
Their bowlers lacked the lines and lengths and it affected their game as the team went for plenty and allowed the Black Caps to post a whopping 344/9.
Chapman crush Pakistan's hopes
New Zealand were pushed on the back-foot early in their innings as the team tottered at 50/3. However, Mark Chapman, their biggest nemesis came to spoil the party as the all-rounder smashed 132 off 111 runs and was amply supported by fifties from Daryl Mitchell and Muhammad Abbas as the hosts reached a commanding total.
In reply, Pakistan were always behind the required rate and their batting crumbled once Babar Azam was dismissed.
