In a huge moment on Day 3 of the Ranji Trophy 2024 final at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai's captain Ajinkya Rahane's attempt to anchor his team's innings came to an abrupt halt.

Rahane, who had been the talk of the town for his string of lacklustre performances leading up to the final, sought redemption against an in-form Vidarbha side. His innings, however, was nipped in the bud by Vidarbha's spinner Harsh Dubey in the early hours on Day 3.

Ranji Trophy 2024 final: Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane's march ended at 73

After a commendable fifty on Day 2, Rahane's bat was silenced at 73 runs off 143 balls. His innings, filled with five fours and a six, was shaping up to be the cornerstone of Mumbai's dominance. However, the first delivery of the 60th over, an excellent ball from Dubey, cut short his dreams of a century.

The ball, teasingly flighted on off, enticed Ajinkya Rahane forward into a defensive play. It took a slight turn with a bit of extra bounce, grazing the shoulder of his bat and into the ready hands of Vidarbha's skipper and wicketkeeper, Akshay Wadkar, bringing an end to Rahane's fighting effort.

However, Rahane’s fifty was a loud and clear response to his critics, showcasing his mettle in a high-stakes game. Despite his departure, Mumbai, the 41-time Ranji Champions, remained in the driver's seat, steering towards adding another title to their illustrious cabinet.

By the 77th over, Mumbai has strengthened its position at 226/3, extending the lead to a formidable 345 runs. Musheer Khan and Shreyas Iyer are at the crease, looking to pile on the runs quickly.

Musheer is steady at 72, while Iyer, unfazed by the fall of Rahane, has blazed through to 46 off 56 balls, hitting the ground running with five fours and two sixes. The duo will aim to set Vidarbha a massive target, as they eye to add yet another glorious chapter in Mumbai cricket’s storied history by winning the Ranji Trophy 2024 final.
