The two-match Test series between South Africa and Sri Lanka began on November 27. The first match has been action-packed so far, featuring Sri Lanka's struggles in their first innings.
However, Vishwa Fernando delivered a remarkable spell of bowling that left Aiden Markram out for South Africa in their second innings, shocking both the audience and the batter.
Fernando's Flipper Fells Markram
In the fourth ball of the 25th over of South Africa's second innings, Fernando delivered a crucial blow, dismissing opener Aiden Markram, who was just three runs shy of a well-deserved half-century. The dismissal came as a result of Fernando's smart tactical adjustment, exploiting a gap in Markram’s defense.
The left-arm seamer pitched the ball up around off-stump, and as Markram leaned forward to drive, the ball nipped back sharply, taking the inside edge and crashing into the stumps.
The South African batter was clearly disappointed, having played a solid innings up until that point. However, Fernando's skill and precision proved too much for him. This wicket was a crucial breakthrough for Sri Lanka, as they looked to gain a foothold in the match.
Marco Jansen Dominates Sri lanka's First Innings
Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl first on a bowler-friendly pitch. They managed to contain South Africa to a modest total of 191 runs in 49.4 overs, with skipper Temba Bavuma contributing significantly to the innings by scoring 70 runs. Asitha Fernando and Lahiru Kumara each took three wickets, effectively dismantling the Proteas' batting lineup.
However, Sri Lanka's fate was sealed by Marco Jansen, the 24-year-old bowling allrounder. The Sri Lankan batting order crumbled from the very beginning, with Kagiso Rabada claiming the first wicket. Jansen then delivered a spectacular performance, taking 7 wickets for just 13 runs in 6.5 overs, helping to bowl Sri Lanka out for a mere 42 runs in 13.5 overs. Gerald Coetzee also made significant contribution by taking 2 wickets in his 3 overs.
