The drama over the upcoming Champions Trophy is far from over. The tournament is scheduled to raise curtains in February. But still, now, India’s participation in the marquee event is under the cover. Pakistan Cricket Board is not ready to accept the Hybrid Model. Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi stood for PCB and supported that decision.
The hybrid model was approached by the Pakistan Cricket Board but they denied that. They are on their stand to host the prestigious event on their home soil. While standing beside the PCB, former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi blamed the BCCI. along with that, he requested ICC to address the confusion over the upcoming tournament.
Shahid Afridi’s Tweet
After 2017, the Champions Trophy is coming back. In the last edition, Pakistan lifted the trophy while showcasing their dominance. As the marquee cricket tournament is coming back, Pakistan is set to host the event. But massive confusion is going over that.
Keeping the security and the political tension with Pakistan in mind, Team India’s tour to their neighboring country is still not cleared. Now, former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi supported PCB's decision not to adopt the hybrid model. Besides that, he accused BCCI of mixing politics with sport. He also mentioned that Pakistan toured India five times after 26/11. On social media, he shared his views.
“By intertwining politics with sports, the BCCI has placed international cricket in a precarious position. Fully support the PCB's stance against the hybrid model - especially since Pakistan (despite security concerns) has toured India five times, including a bilateral white-ball series, post-26/11. It's time for the ICC and its Board of Directors to uphold fairness and assert their authority” Afridi wrote on ‘X’.
The decision is Still Pending
As Team India’s travel scenario is still blurry, the final decision is still under process. Before that, Pakistan hosted the Asia Cup 2023. Team India didn’t travel to Pakistan. The tournament was converted into a hybrid model. Team India played all their matches in Sri Lanka.
In this shaky situation, the future of the Champions Trophy is yet to be decided. Recently the cancelation of Sri Lanka A’s series added more fuel to it. Keeping all the situation in mind, ICC is all set to hold a meeting on November 29. Both sides will be keen to find a solution for the situation.
