Abdullah Shafique broke the jinx on Monday (October 23) during Pakistan’s World Cup 2023 clash against Afghanistan at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. The Men in Green, who had not hit a single six since the start of 2023 in the powerplay overs, had their first-ever against their continent rivals.

It happened on the third ball of the fifth over, bowled by Naveen-ul-Haq, which was a shoulder-high short delivery just outside the off stump. As the Men in Green supporters watched, Shafique picked it up perfectly and pulled it for a glorious six over deep square leg.

Notably, it is important to mention that Pakistan batters have played 1168 deliveries in the Powerplays in 2023 until then, and did not send a shot over the ropes for not even once.

Opting to bat, Pakistan got off to an excellent start against Afghanistan, having posted 54/0 in nine overs as of writing. Abdullah Shafique is going strong, on 37* off 35 balls, whereas Imam-ul-Haq is on 16* off 18 deliveries.

Meanwhile, Pakistan have brought back Shadab Khan in to replace Mohammad Nawaz. Afghanistan, on the other hand, are going with four spinners, with Noor Ahmad joining Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Mohammad Nabi.
