Brief Scores: India Under-19: 251-7 (50 overs) [Adarsh Singh: 76 (96), Uday Saharan: 64* (94); Maruf Mridha 5/43 (8), Chowdhur Md Rizwan 1/23 (5)] defeated Bangladesh Under-19: 167 all out (45.5 overs) [Mohammad Shihab James: 54 (77), Ariful Islam: 41 (71); Saumy Pandey 4/24 (9.5), Musheer Khan 2/35 (10)] by 84 runs.

India Under-19 walloped Bangladesh in their opening Group A Under-19 World Cup 2024 clash at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein.

Adarsh, Saharan lists 50 before Maruf sizzles

After losing the toss and being put into bat first, India Under-19 opener Adarsh Singh lost partner Arshin Kulkarni and number three Musheer Khan both at the hands of Bangladesh seamer Maruf Mridha inside the first eight overs of the innings.

Jolted early at 31-2, Adarsh led India’s recovery with a 116-run third-wicket partnership with captain Uday Saharan. Both cricketers listed dazzling half-centuries in their composed fightback, with Adarsh leading the way through his calculated 76. Captain Saharan, on the other hand, crafted 64 runs from 94 balls before he miscued one to short third against Mahfuzur Rahman Rabby’s left-arm spin.

Wicketkeeper Aravelly Avanish and lower-order batter Sachin Dhas scored valiant 20s in the slog overs, while Mridha kept breaking Indian momentum with three wickets in a spell to restrict the ‘Boys in Blue’ to 251-7 off 50 overs. The speedster eventually finished with astonishing figures of 5-43, and was assisted with a wicket each from Rabby and right-arm pacer Chowdhury Md Rizwan throughout the innings.

Saumy Pandey leads bowler’s dominance in big win

Defending 252 for a win, Indian speedster Raj Limbani delivered the early breakthrough by packing Bangladeshi opener Jishan Alam for just 14. Ace spinner Saumy Pandey snapped the subsequent two wickets as Bangladesh slumped to 41-3 by the brink of the opening powerplay.

Arshin Kulkarni trapped Ahrar Amin in front of stumps to worsen Bangladesh’s troubles at 50-4, before Ariful Islam (41) and Mohammad Shihab James (54) revived team’s run-chase with a rebellious 77-run partnership. Their dismissals in quick succession, both at the hands of left-arm Indian spinner Musheer Khan eventually extinguished Bangladesh’s dwindling hopes, as they folded up for just 167 by 45.5 overs.

Pandey, after wrecking the Bangladeshi top-order, picked up the final two wickets on offer to ensure India Under-19 bagged their two Group A points with an 84-run win.
