How Pat Cummins Lost The Top Of His Middle Finger? Here's The Painful Story

Active Australian captain Pat Cummins did not have the most pleasant of starts to his international career, despite winning the ‘Player of the Match’ in his debut Test. While the cricketer became Australia’s youngest Test debutant in more than 50 years back in November 2011 with a match against South Africa, he had to wait nearly six-and-a-half years before making his subsequent appearance in the format.

Cummins battled numerous injury concerns during the first half of his competitive career, before eventually becoming the world-conquering leader of the Australian cricket team.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest modern-day fast bowlers, one of the earliest injuries of his life once threatened to extinguish his playing career before it even took off. The injury in question is the one he sustained during his childhood, back when he lost the top of the middle finger of his bowling hand.

Here at OneCricket, we take a look back at what really happened with Pat Cummins during his childhood which nearly dashed his dreams of playing cricket for Australia.

When Cummins had his middle finger accidentally cut

When Pat Cummins was four years old, he lost the top of the middle finger of his right hand due to a freak accident at home. The incident took place when a young Pat was distributing lollipops to his other four siblings.

When he opened the bathroom door to present his sister Laura the same, she slammed the door in response, which subsequently cut the top of Pat’s middle finger.

During May 2021, the cricketer narrated the entire incident while speaking with Mayanti Langer and Graeme Swann on the Players’ Lounge Cricket Podcast.

Fortunately for the Cummins family, Pat went on to represent, and even lead Australia all while helming the country’s pace attack across all formats.

In the year 2023 itself, he led Australia to emphatic victories at the WTC final as well as in the 2023 World Cup title clash in India. A month after becoming a World Cup winning captain, he became one of the costliest purchases in IPL auction history.
