New Zealand dominate England again in third ODI [Source: @TheBarmyArmy/X.com]
In a gripping contest at Wellington, New Zealand held their nerve to defeat England by two wickets in the third and final ODI, completing a 3–0 series whitewash. What looked like a comfortable chase at one stage turned into a nail-biting finish.
But Zakary Foulkes and Blair Tickner showed calmness under pressure to take the hosts home with eight balls to spare.
England’s top order collapses yet again
Sent in to bat first, England had another poor start as their top order crumbled under the pressure of New Zealand’s disciplined bowling.
Jacob Duffy and debutant Zakary Foulkes wreaked havoc early on, dismissing Jamie Smith (5), Joe Root (2), and Ben Duckett (8) within the first five overs.
Captain Harry Brook’s lean run continued as he fell cheaply for 6, leaving England tottering at 31/4. When Jacob Bethell was dismissed at 44/5, it seemed England were staring at another sub-200 total.
Amid the collapse, wicket-keeper Jos Buttler tried to rebuild, but even he struggled for fluency, scoring 38 off 56 before being bowled by Tickner.
It was Jamie Overton who injected life into England’s innings with a bold counterattack. His 68 off 62 balls, studded with 10 fours and two sixes, turned the momentum briefly in England’s favour.
Overton found support from Brydon Carse, who smashed a quick 36 off 30 balls, helping England cross the 200 mark. However, Tickner’s four-wicket haul and Duffy’s early breakthroughs ensured the visitors were bowled out for 222 in 40.2 overs.
New Zealand secure comfortable win steady and measured approach
Meanwhile, New Zealand’s chase began confidently, led by Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway. The duo added 78 runs in just 13 overs, punishing the English pacers for poor length.
Ravindra’s strokeplay was exquisite as he raced to 46 off 37 balls before being bowled by Sam Curran. Conway followed soon after for 34, run out against the flow of play.
England clawed their way back as wickets fell in clusters. Will Young and Tom Latham fell cheaply, and when Michael Bracewell holed out for 13, New Zealand slipped to 147/5.
Daryl Mitchell held the innings together with a steady 44, but his departure in the 39th over left the hosts in a tricky situation at 196/8.
Still 27 runs needed, England sensed a comeback. However, Zakary Foulkes (14)* and Blair Tickner (18)* showed remarkable composure.
Smartly rotating strike and punishing loose deliveries, the pair guided New Zealand to victory in 44.4 overs. With that victory, New Zealand comfortably clean-swept England with a 3-0 finish.
