In a remarkable achievement, swashbuckling batter Jos Buttler surpassed legendary cricketer Ian Bell on the list of England batters with the most ODI runs. Buttler sustained his lean patch and managed only nine runs in the second ODI against New Zealand; however, he managed to go past Bell and claim the third position on the list.
Most runs for England in ODIs: Buttler breaks Bell's record
Ian Bell is regarded as one of the most celebrated English cricketers of all time. Known for his stoic technique and elegant drives, Bell retired with 5416 runs in One-Day Internationals. Interestingly, Jos Buttler had exactly the same number of runs in the format before the second ODI against New Zealand at Seddon Park. So, as soon as he scored his first run in the match, Buttler overtook the talismanic cricketer and became the third-highest run-getter for England in ODIs.
While Bell was known for his exquisite timing, Buttler's power-hitting makes him a vital member of the English ODI setup. That said, the veteran cricketer has yet to step up with the bat in this series, registering scores of four and nine in the first two matches. Overall, he sits third on the list of England's highest run scorers in ODIs, having accumulated 5425 runs. Here's a list of the top ten batters with the most ODI runs for England.
- Joe Root - 7328
- Eoin Morgan - 6957
- Jos Buttler - 5425
- Ian Bell - 5416
- Paul Collingwood - 5092
- Alec Stewart - 4677
- Kevin Pietersen - 4422
- Marcus Trescothick - 4335
- Graham Gooch - 4290
- Jason Roy - 4271
England had a poor outing once again, as the failures from key players like Ben Duckett, Root, Jacob Bethell and Buttler ensured they didn't breach the 200-run mark. Despite Jamie Overton's valiant 28-ball 42, the visitors were folded out for 175 inside 36 overs. As of writing, New Zealand were seven for one, with Kane Williamson and Rachin Ravindra both batting on 3*.
