The closing moments of Day 4 in the Lord’s Test were just a deja vu of Day 3 with England batting that side. The last two overs on Day 4 saw tempers flare just like the previous day and tensions boiled over as England turned up the heat on India’s tail.
With just two overs left in the day and India reeling at 57/3, the nightwatchman Akash Deep became the centre of a fiery exchange as Stokes & Co. had the last laugh.
Carse Initiates Akash Deep's Removal
Brydon Carse initiated the chaos with a barrage of hostile deliveries and relentless body language in the second last over. He beat Akash Deep’s bat multiple times, peppered him with inswingers, and went up for two loud LBW appeals, one of which was reviewed but came back as an umpire’s call.
The quick also struck Akash Deep on the thigh on the third ball, forcing the Indian physio to come out, further annoying the English fielders. Yet, the English players could not complain since Crawley did the same on Day 3. Brydon Carse and Duckett sledged him continuously teasing and filling Akash Deep's ears, and even KL Rahul had to step in to defuse the situation.
Stokes Cleans Up India's Nightwatchman With A Peach!
However, in the final over, Ben Stokes took charge as Carse's tease worked up Akash Deep. After exchanging words with Rahul between deliveries, the England skipper delivered a beauty, a good length ball that nipped away and sent Akash Deep’s off-stump flying.
Stokes’s celebration was fierce and symbolic as he pointed to the sky, having knocked over the nightwatchman and ensured India ended Day 4 at 58/4, still needing 135 runs to win. With England dismantling the pawn in the final over, cricket fans now await a heated finish on a spicy final day at Lord's.
