The final over of Day 3 in the third Test between England and India turned into a tense affair as emotions ran high between Zak Crawley and the Indian camp, led by an animated Shubman Gill.
With only one over left to be bowled in the day, Jasprit Bumrah steamed in to deliver six intense balls that sparked a confrontation leading to a charged atmosphere on the ground. There was action, drama, and theatre of all sorts in the last over of Day 3 that was bowled at Lord's so, let's take a look at what exactly happened there.
Theatrics And Animated Exchange Take Over At Lord's
Crawley and Ben Duckett opened England’s second innings with just ten minutes remaining in the day after both sides finished with identical first-innings totals of 387. India, aiming to sneak in two overs before stumps, was met with resistance, both with the bat and the clock.
The first ball of the over was a gentle loosener at 126 kph, swinging away on a good length. Crawley comfortably shouldered arms. But from there, things escalated.
Bumrah’s second delivery, full and shaping into leg stump, was clipped for two runs as Crawley and England got off the mark. Akash Deep cut it off near the boundary, but the clock continued ticking.
Gill Loses Cool As Umpires Intervene
By the third delivery, tensions became visible. Bumrah started his run up and when he was just about to pitch his ball, Crawley pulled away, citing distraction near the sight screen. The Indian pacer was visibly annoyed as he sarcastically smiled at Crawley.
The Indian slip cordon also chimed in as the umpires were forced to step in and restore order. Shubman Gill, in particular, charged up to Crawley, gesturing and accusing the England opener while mouthing, "Get some b**ls eh?" Nevertheless, the third ball was then bowled by Bumrah and was left alone by Crawley.
Boiling Point Reached Before Day's End
Crawley tapped the fourth delivery to the backward point and the fifth ball struck him on the bottom hand as he removed his glove and called for the physio. The Indian players, sensing a tactic to avoid bowling a second over, surrounded the batter and applauded with sarcastic slow caps.
Gill enraged, exchanged words with Zak Crawley, mocking him while the batter stood his ground and returned the favour with both pointing fingers at each other. Clearly, the drama reached its peak here! Ben Duckett too joined the heat as his exchange with Indian fielders didn't appear pleasant.
The sixth and final delivery was a gem. Bumrah pitched it up on off-stump at 143 kph, jagging it away just past Crawley’s bat. It narrowly missed the outside edge, drawing gasps from the Indian fielders. England survived the over and safely returned to the pavilion with 2/0 on the board.
Lord's Ready For Fiery Day 4
Best to say, it was the friction, not the scoreboard, that defined the closing stages of the day at Lord's. What was expected to be a routine final overturned into a fiery exchange of words and expressions, setting the stage for what promises to be an intense Day 4 at the Home of Cricket.
