South Africa Register Another 'Unwanted' Record In ODI World Cups

image-lp11yjmmQuinton De Kock departs for just 3 in the semifinal

South Africa,  who were impeccable throughout the league stage of the World Cup 2023, are choking in the semifinals, yet again against the Aussies.

The history seems to be repeating again as in the World Cup 2007, the Proteas faced a terrible defeat in the semifinals against the five-time champions Australia. They have registered another low score at the end of the first powerplay, as Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc kept them in check and they could only score 18 for 2 in the first 10 overs.

Back in the 2007 semifinal between these two batting prowess, Nathan Bracken, Glenn McGrath and Shaun Tait got the best of the Proteas in the powerplay as they lost five wickets including the likes of Graeme Smith, AB De Villiers and Jaques Kallis. They managed to score just 27 runs for 5 wickets in the first ten overs.

Lowest totals in powerplays in World Cups by South Africa

  • 12/2 vs New Zealand, St George's, 2007
  • 18/2 vs Australia, Eden Gardens, 2023 Semifinal*
  • 27/5 vs Australia, Gros Islet, 2007 Semifinal
  • 28/2 vs Zimbabwe, Hamilton, 2015

The carnage was started by Mitchell Starc, who dismissed an out-of-form Temba Bavuma for duck. Hazlewood followed it up with the wicket of Quinton de Kock, as the team lost the plot in the power-play itself. Two more wickets of Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen pushed them on the back-foot, before a resurrection took place between Heinrich Klaasen and Davod Miller.
