On Wednesday, South Africa achieved an embarrassing feat, recording their lowest-ever Test total against India in Test cricket. The Proteas, who took an unassailable 1-0 lead by securing a thumping win in the first Test in Centurion, fell like a pack of cards in Cape Town to attain the forgettable feat.

Overall, 55 all out is South Africa's lowest-ever team total against India in Tests besides being their seventh-lowest total in the purest format.

Furthermore, this is the tenth time South Africa were bowled out for a below-100 score at Newlands in Cape Town. Their previous lowest Test total against India was 79, which they registered in Nagpur back in 2015.

South Africa's lowest totals vs India in Tests

  • 55 - Cape Town, 2024
  • 79 - Nagpur, 2015
  • 84 - Johannesburg, 2006
  • 105 - Ahmedabad, 1996
  • 109 - Mohali, 2015

After opting to bat first, South Africa had a shaky start to their innings, losing Aiden Markram for two in the fourth over. Soon, Markram's opening partner Dean Elgar followed him, becoming Siraj's second victim on his final Test.

The Indian speedster ran riot and dismissed four more Proteas batters to record a clinical six-fer before Mukesh Kumar's twin strikes bundled South Africa out for 55.
