Shubman Gill etched his name in history with a brilliant double century on Day 2 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston, guiding India to a dominant 500-nearing score in the second session. The Indian captain reached his maiden Test double hundred in the 123rd over, facing 316 balls and hitting 23 boundaries and two sixes.

Gill’s milestone sees him become only the sixth Indian captain to score a double hundred in Test cricket, joining a legendary list including veterans like Kohli, MS Dhoni, Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar.

This knock, still in progress as the match unfolds live, also marks Gill’s second century in as many Tests since taking over the leadership role, underscoring his growing stature as a dependable leader and top-order batter.

Gill Leaves Scathing Impact On England

Shubman Gill came to the crease at a tricky stage on Day 1 and has since anchored the innings with authority, steadily accelerating as the innings progressed.

England opted to bowl first under cloudy skies, hoping to repeat their early success from the previous Test. But Gill weathered the initial challenge with calm determination.

Even as wickets fell around him—KL Rahul and Nitish Reddy departing early—Gill stitched crucial partnerships with Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar to keep the scoreboard moving. His timing, footwork, and shot selection frustrated England's bowlers, who toiled hard without much reward.

During the second session on Day 2, Gill stands unbeaten on 209*, with India sitting comfortably at 482/6. His partnership with Washington Sundar, who is on 22*, continues to frustrate the English bowlers, who have failed to find breakthroughs despite long spells.

England's bowling attack, led by Chris Woakes and supported by Brydon Carse and Shoaib Bashir, lacked penetration. Though Woakes and Tongue managed two and one wickets respectively, they could not contain Gill’s charge once he got set.
