Shubman Gill - the present and future of Indian cricket as the Men in Blue enter a new era across formats. The T20I side has changed, the ODI team still remains solid but the Test team is going through a bit of transition with Gil being the leader of the group. In the current England tour, the Test captain of India smacked two centuries in back-to-back Tests to silence his critics.

However, despite progressing well in red-ball cricket, Gill's best format remains the ODIs, where he has truly captivated the fans with his flamboyance. 2023 was a special year for the young India opener as he piled on truckloads of runs in the 50-over format.

When Gill smashed his highest score in ODIs

But the knock that truly put him as the "next big thing" of Indian cricket came up against New Zealand in January 2023. It was the first ODI of the series in Hyderabad as India batted first on the flattest track of the entire series.

Gill, and captain Rohit Sharma added 60 runs for the opening wicket before Rohit departed for 34. Virat Kohli and Ishan Kishan, soon followed their skipper back to the pavilion as the side lost three quick wickets. However, with wickets tumbling, Gill decided to unleash his aggressive side as the batter then took full advantage of the flat conditions.

Be it Mitch Santner, Lockie Ferguson, or any other Kiwi bowlers, none could stand the India opener's wrath as he smashed them to all corners of the Uppal Stadium. As the innings progressed, Gill's confidence increased and he finally reached the historic double-century mark. The batter became the fifth Indian to score a double ton in 50-overs format.

His innings was laced with 19 fours and 9 sixes as the New Zealand side had no answer and India managed to post 349/8. The Kiwis did gave a mighty scare in the run-chase but they lost the match by 12 runs.
