In a remarkable achievement, Shubman Gill has set the record for the highest individual score by an Indian captain in Tests in England. The stylish right-hander attained the phenomenal landmark during the ongoing Test match at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

Gill Records Highest Test Score, Goes Past Azharuddin

Coming at number four, Shubman Gill went on to slam his seventh Test century, eventually recording his first-ever 150-plus score in the format. He further broke Mohammad Azharuddin's record, registering the highest individual score by an Indian captain on English soil.

Highest Individual Scores As Indian Captain In England

  • Shubman Gill - 199*
  • Mohammad Azharuddin - 179
  • Virat Kohli - 149
  • Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi - 148
  • Sourav Ganguly - 128

As mentioned above, Gill currently has the highest score by an Indian captain in a Test match in England. The legendary Mohammad Azharuddin claims the second position, with Kohli and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi occupying the third and fourth spots, respectively.

Former captain Sourav Ganguly, who hammered a blistering ton in the triumphant 2002 Leeds Test, is placed fifth, with his highest score in England reading 128.

Nevertheless, Gill's heroics places him above these legendary figures on this elite list. The Punjab-born cricketer has hit his peak right after taking up India's Test captaincy from Rohit Sharma. He was sublime in the first Test, amassing a glorious century in the first innings. And now, he has followed it up with another memorable knock.

Meanwhile, Gill's partner-in-crime, Ravindra Jadeja missed out on a well-deserved hundred, and Washington Sundar joined the skipper after his dismissal. As of writing, India were 470 for six, with Sundar and Gill batting on 20* and 199*, respectively.
