In a historic event, legendary Indian cricketer Farokh Engineer has been honoured, with the Lancashire Cricket Club naming a stand after him at Old Trafford in Manchester. The veteran cricketer is one of the invitees to the fourth Test between India and England alongside his former Lancashire teammate and West Indies' two-time World Cup-winning captain Clive Lloyd.
Who Is Farokh Engineer And Why Did Lancashire Honour Him?
Farokh Engineer is a former Indian cricketer who played as a wicketkeeper. He was born on February 25, 1938, in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Hailed for his neat glove-work behind the stumps, Engineer was a fabulous Test batter. Apart from being incredibly agile as a wicketkeeper, the right-hander showcased batting finesse on multiple occasions, saving India from precarious situations with his grit and scintillating stroke play.
He represented India in 46 Test matches, amassing 2611 runs, including sixteen fifties and two hundreds, at an average of 31.08.
Apart from India, Engineer played First-Class matches for Mumbai. His red-ball career transcended eras, as he featured in 335 matches, scoring 13436 runs with 13 centuries and 69 fifties.
He was also one of the most reputed overseas names in the English domestic circuit, having served Lancashire with distinction for close to a decade.
The talismanic cricketer played a pivotal role in Lancashire's success in the County Championship, recording 5942 runs, 429 catches and 35 stumpings during his stint with the club from 1968 to 1976.
Therefore, the Lancashire Cricket Club decided to honour him by naming a stand at Old Trafford after him, which was unveiled on day 1 of the India vs England Test match. Engineer is considered as one of India's finest wicketkeepers of all time, and several Indian keeper-batters idolise him.
