Brisbane Heat succumbed to their second defeat in three games this BBL 2025-26 season to languish at number seventh spot on the eight-team standings. Their overseas quick and Pakistan international Shaheen Afridi, however, demonstrated signs of improvement in the game after getting taken apart by Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers earlier in the competition.

Delivering his quota of four overs, Afridi conceded 35 runs in the process with the prized scalp of Sydney Thunder’s well-set opener Matthew Gilkes at the death. Still below par as per his own standards, the speedster’s economy rate of 8.75 marked considerably better than his previous two spells, where he leaked runs at well above 12-an-over on both occasions.

Shaheen Afridi takes instant DRS in hilarious BBL moment

Brisbane Heat’s Pakistan import Shaheen Afridi sent down a crushing yorker to half-centurion Matthew Gilkes during the penultimate over of the Sydney Thunder innings at the Manuka Oval in Canberra.

However, Shaheen’s massive appeal got turned down by the on-field umpire Claire Polosak. Nonetheless, in a hilarious incident, the ace Pakistan paceman instantly opted for a review, without even consulting his captain and fellow fast bowler Xavier Bartlett.

Fortunately for Shaheen Afridi, his DRS gamble paid off as umpire Claire was forced to change her decision to ‘Out’, prompting Gilkes to make his way back to the sheds after cracking 76 from 48 balls.

Even though Shaheen Afridi demonstrated a significant improvement in his bowling this BBL 2025-26 season, the Brisbane Heat team still lost the match by 34 runs.

Chasing 194 for a win, the Heat were restricted to 159-6 in 20 overs by Sydney Thunder bowlers Shadab Khan (4-24) and Daniel Sams (2-25).

Shaheen Afridi and the rest of his Brisbane Heat teammates will now face Adelaide Strikers in match 13 of the BBL 2025-26 season on December 27 in Brisbane.
