Marco Jansen dusted out Pakistan’s second innings on Day 3 of the Centurion Test with a scintillating six-wicket haul. Later in the day, Khurram Shahzad and Mohammad Abbas sparked a remarkable fightback for the visitors just before stumps.
Here’s the timeline of how SA vs PAK panned out in Centurion:
SA vs PAK Highlights: Babar Azam Snaps Run-Drought With Welcome 50
Pakistan batting maverick Babar Azam listed his first Test half-century in over two years while forming a fighting 79-run partnership with overnight partner Saud Shakeel. Babar unfurled nine elegant boundaries during his 85-ball stay at the crease until he slashed one straight towards Corbin Bosch off Marco Jansen at 153-4.
Shakeel, at the other end, raged on and top-scored in the innings by crafting 84 runs from 113 balls with 10 boundaries and a six.
SA vs PAK Highlights: Jansen Takes Six To Envelop Pakistan For 237
Babar Azam’s dismissal reopened the floodgates for hosts South Africa, with seamer Marco Jansen making the most of his prized breakthrough. After dismissing Babar, the lanky Proteas speedster got both Mohammad Rizwan and Agha Salman to nick one behind towards wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne as the ‘Men in Green’ crashed from 153-3 to 176-6 in the space of just six overs.
Aamer Jamal failed to capitalize on his hard-earned start as he fell to a trap laid out by Dane Paterson at 208-7. The following over, Kagiso Rabada induced a nick off Naseem Shah towards slips, while Jansen picked up his sixth wicket of the innings in the form of half-centurion Saud Shakeel to seal figures of 6-52. Debutant Corbin Bosch claimed the final wicket on offer to fold up Pakistan for 237 in 59.4 overs.
SA vs PAK Highlights: Mohammad Abbas, Shahzad Give Pakistan A Fighting Chance
Left to chase 148 runs for a win, South Africa lost opener Tony de Zorzi for just two in the fourth over of the innings. In a sudden lapse in concentration, the cricketer was caught plumb in front by Pakistan new ball paceman Mohammad Abbas.
Khurram Shahzad also got into the groove with the early wicket of number three batter Ryan Rickelton for a five-ball duck. With the ball still hard and new, Abbas trapped Tristan Stubbs for just a single towards the closing stages of the day as South Africa reached stumps with a troublesome 27-3 from nine overs.
Unbeaten opener Aiden Markram (22*) and captain Temba Bavuma (0*) will resume South Africa’s innings on Day 4 as they require another 121 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series.
