Virat Kohli came up trumps against New Zealand at the 2023 World Cup semi-final, punching out his third century of the tournament and the 50th of his glittering ODI career.

The innings took him past Sachin Tendulkar for a number of elite batting milestones, including the records for producing most ODI centuries and for scoring most runs in a single edition of a World Cup.

As one can expect, Kohli was hailed with a thunderous round of applause from a capacity Wankhede Stadium, where Tendulkar himself was in attendance along with a number of cricketing personalities and Bollywood stars.

At a time when Kohli was making his way back to the pavilion upon his dismissal, the Indian batting veteran was also applauded by his captain and fellow senior Rohit Sharma.

Rohit Sharma applauds Kohli in dressing room

Virat Kohli arrived to the crease following the dismissal of opening batsman Rohit Sharma in the ninth over of the innings. Batting at number three, the legendary right-hander formed crucial partnerships with Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer and ensured Team India soared past the 300-run mark with ease.

Kohli scored 117 runs from just 113 balls before he was holed out by Devon Conway at deep square leg. As the batting veteran was making his way back to the pavilion, he was greeted by an overenthusiastic Rohit Sharma with a cheerful applause. The Indian support staff also joined in captain Sharma to congratulate the centurion in the dressing room.

Virat Kohli’s batting masterclass and Rohit Sharma’s dead-eyed tonking at the top ensured Team India charted 397-4 from their 50 overs. Shreyas Iyer at number four also bludgeoned a thunderous ton while KL Rahul slapped a 20-ball 39 at the death.
