In a spectacular display of batting brilliance, Virat Kohli etched his name in the history books by shattering the record for the most centuries in One Day Internationals (ODI). The momentous achievement during the first semi-final of the ICC World Cup 2023 in Mumbai, where Kohli smashed his 50th ODI ton against New Zealand.

Kohli's landmark century, which was his first in the knockout stage of a World Cup, came in the 42nd over bowled by New Zealand's Lockie Ferguson. His innings, peppered with eight boundaries and a six, not only thrilled the fans but also saw him surpass the legendary Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most runs in a single World Cup edition.

In a heartwarming response to Kohli's achievement, Tendulkar, whose record Kohli surpassed, took to Twitter to express his admiration and joy. He reminisced about their first encounter in the Indian dressing room, where a young Kohli was playfully pranked into showing respect to the senior player.

The Indian veteran further recalled how Kohli's passion and skill quickly won over his heart. Tendulkar expressed his happiness that it was Kohli, an Indian player of such calibre and dedication, who broke his record. He noted the significance of Kohli achieving this feat in a World Cup Semi-final and at Tendulkar's home ground, calling it the "icing on the cake."

“The first time I met you in the Indian dressing room, you were pranked by other teammates into touching my feet. I couldn’t stop laughing that day. But soon, you touched my heart with your passion and skill. I am so happy that that young boy has grown into a ‘Virat’ player. I couldn’t be happier that an Indian broke my record. And to do it on the biggest stage - in the World Cup Semi-final - and at my home ground is the icing on the cake,” wrote Tendulkar.


Meanwhile, Kohli's form in this World Cup has been nothing short of phenomenal. He has amassed 711 runs at an astonishing average of 101.57 across 10 innings. His heroics have been vital in India's journey in the tournament, with his latest century propelling India to a formidable 397/4 against New Zealand.
