In a remarkable achievement, legendary Indian batter Virat Kohli overtook former Australian captain Ricky Ponting to become the third-highest run-getter in ODI cricket. Kohli attained the milestone during India's all-important World Cup semifinal fixture against New Zealand at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Most runs in One-Day Internationals

  • Sachin Tendulkar- 18426 runs in 452 innings
  • Kumar Sangakkara- 14234 runs in 380 innings
  • Virat Kohli- 13747* runs in 279 innings
  • Ricky Ponting- 13704 runs in 365 innings
  • Sanath Jayasuriya- 13430 runs in 433 innings

Since debuting in 2008, Kohli has established himself as a vital cog in the Indian batting lineup. He has had a stellar World Cup 2023, amassing truckloads of runs in the competition.

After opting to bat first, India were off to a flier as Rohit Sharma came out with all guns blazing from the word go. However, as soon as the Indian captain was dismissed, Kohli took the charge to steady the ship alongside promising opener Shubman Gill. The duo stitched a sensational 93-run stand for the second wicket, consolidating the innings with perfection.

As of writing, India are in a commanding position, placed at 214 for 1 in 30 overs, with Kohli and Shreyas Iyer batting on 65* and 19*, respectively.
