England made lightwork of Ireland’s big total in the first T20I, courtesy of explosive opening batter Phil Salt. Jos Buttler and interim captain Jacob Bethell also made their presence felt with cracking cameos at the top of the order.
Here, we take a look at the entire highlights of the first T20I of the three-match series between Ireland and England, as it panned out at the Village in Malahide, Dublin on Wednesday, September 17.
Harry Tector, Tucker Fifties Blaze Ireland To 196
Batting first, Ireland mounted a staggering 196-3 from 20 overs. Captain Paul Stirling carved 34 runs off 22 balls and his opening partner Ross Adair made a near run-a-ball 26 before both well-set batters were dismissed by Adil Rashid (1-36) and Liam Dawson (1-39) respectively in quick succession.
Harry Tector at number three bludgeoned a brisk 61* off 36 balls with six boundaries and two huge sixes. Lorcan Tucker also cracked 55 from 36 deliveries before his knock was curtailed by Jamie Overton in the final over. George Dockrell launched Overton for a huge six off his only ball as Ireland finished strong in their innings.
Phil Salt Blows Away Ireland In Tall Chase
Phil Salt and Jos Buttler electrocuted the Irish new-ball attack with a 74-run opening partnership in just 28 balls, with Buttler cracking 28 off those runs in 10 deliveries before getting toppled by Matthew Humphreys. Captain Jacob Bethell also made 24 off 16 balls with three boundaries and a six, while Sam Curran chipped in with a 15-ball 27.
Rehan Ahmed and Tom Banton failed to sustain England’s top-order start, but in-form Salt top-scored in the innings with a fiery 89 off 46 balls with 10 boundaries and four huge sixes. Despite wicket-taking spells from Humphreys (2-44) and Graham Hume (2-36), England romped to an easy four-wicket win in just 17.4 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series.
