Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Abbas continued his red-hot form with the ball this Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2025 season for the Lahore Region Whites. Mere days after skittling Karachi Region Blues with a stunning six-wicket haul in Abbottabad last week, Abbas has now bagged a sensational five-fer, albeit against Multan Region in the 25th match of the tournament.

Sharing the new ball with Nisar Ahmad, Mohammad Abbas decimated Multan’s top and middle-order to snare figures of 5-32 in just 15.4 overs. Apart from blowing away the entire Multan Region line-up for just 164 in 43.4 overs, Abbas has joined England’s all-time great James Anderson and former Pakistan cricketer Abdur Rauf for a huge bowling record in first-class cricket.

Mohammad Abbas joins elite bowling list with another five-fer

Mohammad Abbas picked up the 51st five-wicket haul of his first-class career after dismantling Multan Region on Day 1 of their Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2025 bout at Islamabad’s Marghzar Cricket Ground. Notably, Abbas has snared five of those five-fers in 27 Tests for the Pakistan team.

Nonetheless, with his latest five-fer, the 35-year-old has joined legendary paceman James Anderson and former Pakistan cricketer Abdur Rauf as only the third bowler since 2001 to bag more than 50 five-wicket hauls in first-class cricket.

Most five-fers in first-class cricket since 2001:

  • Abdur Rauf – 57
  • James Anderson – 55
  • Mohammad Abbas – 51*

In James Anderson’s case, the legendary Englishman picked up 32 of his first-class five-fers in Test cricket for his country.

Nonetheless, despite his prolific run with the ball, Mohammad Abbas was excluded from Pakistan squad in their recently-concluded home Test series against South Africa. He played the last of his 27 Tests for Pakistan back in January earlier this year at Cape Town.
