Former Australian cricketer Michael Klinger has joined the Welsh Fire franchise as the head coach of their women’s team for next year’s The Hundred 2026 season in England. He is also the current director of cricket for Washington Freedom in the USA-based Major League Cricket (MLC).

Klinger’s appointment as Welsh Fire Women head coach further strengthens the ties between the Washington Freedom franchise and the Glamorgan County Cricket Club. It is worth noting that Freedom owner Sanjay Govil, a US-based tech entrepreneur, acquired 49 percent stakes in Welsh Fire during The Hundred equity sale a few months ago.

Michael Klinger further bridges Welsh Fire with Washington Freedom

Michael Klinger has been appointed as the new head coach of the Welsh Fire Women’s team. He was signed on for the role on a two-year contract. Klinger will be replacing former West Indies cricketer Gareth Breese, who coached the Welsh Fire Women’s team for four straight seasons between the years 2022 and 2025.

Breese, however, will stay on with the Welsh Fire Women’s team as an assistant coach. Michael Klinger’s ex-Australian teammate Michael Hussey also retained his role as the head coach of the men’s team.

Despite his appointment as Welsh Fire Women’s head coach, Michael Klinger will continue his role at Washington Freedom. He will now work closely with Welsh Fire general manager Mark Wallace to supervise the recruitment of both men’s and women’s teams.

Glamorgan and Welsh Fire CEO Dan Cherry welcomed the former Australian cricketer into the Welsh Fire family, saying:

“From his career to date, Michael's experience, pedigree and enthusiasm matches our long-term strategic vision of ambition and success for the franchise.”

Michael Klinger himself expressed his excitement in taking over the Welsh Fire coaching role. He also thanked the Manchester Originals franchise for providing him the opportunity of working as the head coach of their women’s team in the 2025 edition of The Hundred.
