All eyes of the Indian cricketing fraternity were on the Vijay Hazare Trophy on December 24, as the cricketing legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma returned for their respective states to feature in the tournament for the first time since 2010 and 2019, respectively. The duo did not disappoint the fans, as they guided Delhi and Mumbai to comfortable wins, scoring 131(101) and 154(94), respectively, in successful chases.

While the two superstars, alongside centurions Ishan Kishan and Vaibhav Suryavanshi, stole the spotlight on Wednesday, several other prominent Indian stars also featured for their states in the opening day games of the 50-over competition. Here's a brief look at their performances.

Padikkal's century stages an epic chase for Karnataka

Hours after Ishan Kishan's record-breaking 125(39) and fifties from Kumar Kushagra and Virat Singh, the opening pair of Mayank Agrawal and Devdutt Padikkal got Karnataka going with a 114(71) partnership. Following Mayank's wicket at 54(34), Padikkal took charge of the chase and got 147(118), with the help of 10 fours and 7 sixes to put his team in a promising position during the chase.

The openers' efforts were backed by Abhinav Manohar's 55*(31) and Dhruv Prabhakar's 40(22), as they chased down 413 runs by 5 wickets and 15 balls remaining.

Captain Rinku and Jurel set UP for a big Round 1 win

While batting first in Rajkot, Uttar Pradesh got a great start through their openers Abhishek Goswami (80) and Aryan Juyal (80). Batting at 3 and 5, respectively, Dhruv Jurel and Rinku Singh built a quick 87(61) partnership and put UP in a promising position at 284/4 in 46.2 overs. Before being dismissed, Jurel scored 80(61), with four fours and four sixes to his name. The southpaw batted till the final over, finishing at 67(48), with six fours and two sixes.

UP got a healthy total of 324/5 and comfortably restricted Hyderabad to 240. The talented youngster Prashant Veer got 3/47 (10), alongside Zeeshan Ansari's 4/31 (10) as they won by 85 runs.

Abhishek and co. outclass Ruturaj-led Maharashtra

Batting first in Jaipur, captain Abhishek Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh stitched a century stand for the first wicket, scoring 48(45) and 60(77), respectively. Their start was backed up by Anmolpreet Singh and Naman Dhir's 156-run partnership, where they scored 85(78) and 97(78) to get a healthy score of 347/6 on the board.

Despite Prithvi Shaw's quick start of 46(39), with 6 fours and a six, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad failed to deliver on the day and Maharashtra failed to chase the target, losing the match by 52 runs. Ramakrishna Ghosh was Maharashtra's stand-out player, who picked 3/73 with his right-arm quick bowling and a run-a-ball 73 in the chase. Abhishek also bowled 6 overs for 1/29, getting rid of the dangerous Shaw.
