Ruturaj Gaikwad listed a fighting half-century on his return to competitive cricket. In December 2023, the 27-year-old injured his right ring finger while fielding in South Africa. The injury ruled him out of India’s subsequent T20I series against Afghanistan, and also placed him out of the selector’s contention for a potential Test debut in a home series against England.

Making his return to competitive cricket after a gap of two months, Gaikwad unleashed a cautious fifty-plus score against Services XI in Maharashtra’s Elite Group A match of the ongoing 2024 Ranji Trophy season.

Ruturaj Gaikwad rescued Maharashtra out of their top-order crisis against Services with a splendid half-century. Turning up his side at Delhi’s Palam A Ground, the elegant right-handed batter belted four boundaries and a six to reach his 50 by the stroke of lunch.

While he originally made his way to the crease following the early dismissal of opener Murtaza Trunkwala in just the third over of the innings, Gaikwad also lost U19 World Cup star Arshin Kulkarni, captain Ankit Bawne, and Kaushal Tambe a while later as Maharashtra slumped to 19-4 inside the opening hour of the match.

With four of Maharashtra’s top five batters all failing to reach the double-digits, number three Gaikwad formed a valiant partnership with Digvijay Patil to take them past the 100-run mark without further casualties.

Ruturaj Gaikwad will soon be seen reprising his role for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise in the much-awaited IPL 2024 season. The cricketer was retained by the CSK management last November on IPL 2024 retention day, alongside teammates MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja, among several others.
