Mitchell Marsh fails to deliver on red ball return [Source: @TheCricketList/x.com]
Mitchell Marsh is in contention to return to Test cricket for the backend of the ongoing Ashes. The Australian all-rounder returned to red-ball cricket after last playing the Boxing Day Test against India last year, playing for Western Australia’s Sheffield Shield side.
With the specific role to play as a power hitter in the middle order, Marsh was a great option. However, Australia’s white-ball captain did not have the start he would have hoped for, as he fell cheaply in both innings against Victoria at the MCG.
In the first innings, he scored 9 off 16 balls and could only manage four in the next innings. Marsh looked confident at first, but Victoria’s short-ball trap worked well against him, and he was caught in the deep.
Western Australia scored 194 runs in the first innings and conceded 255 runs after that. In the second innings, they scored 98/4 and lead by 37 runs at the end of Day 3.
Marsh had a poor outing in the One Day Cup
Earlier, he had a poor outing in the One Day Cup game against Victoria on Tuesday as well. The all-rounder struggled to get going and had only managed two runs in the first 22 balls, but later accelerated to score 17 runs in 27 balls. However, he could not go beyond that.
His failures in recent domestic outings have put him in a very tricky spot for his potential return to the Australian Test side. The management is yet to announce the squad for the last three Tests of the series, and now, Marsh’s chances of returning look very slim.
The side needs an explosive player in the middle order since Travis Head has moved to open the innings in Usman Khawaja’s place. Australia’s regular opener is out with a back injury.
