Mitchell Marsh's return to Test cricket sees a halt [Source: @tctv1offl/x.com]
Mitchell Marsh hasn’t played Test cricket since his last appearance in the Boxing Day Test against India last year. He was now in contention to return to the side for the latter half of the ongoing Ashes for a specific role: a power hitter who can get off to a flyer.
With that in mind, Mitchell Marsh was recalled to Western Australia’s Sheffield Shield side for their next game on Thursday. This match will be his audition of sorts for a place in the Australian squad. But before he takes the field in the Sheffield Shield, he played a One-Day Cup game against Victoria on Tuesday.
Marsh fails on domestic return for Western Australia
His path back to the Test squad did not get off to the best start, as he did not have his best outing. He survived a few close appeals and only managed two runs in the first 22 balls. He then switched gears and quickly scored 15 runs in the next five balls that included two boundaries and a six.
But, unfortunately for him, that’s all he could manage in his brief appearance. Now, as he moves back to red-ball cricket on Thursday, all eyes will be on him to deliver. If he fails to deliver a big knock, his chances of a return to Test cricket will take a serious hit.
Australia gear up for second Ashes Test
In the meantime, Australia are preparing for the second Test of the Ashes in Brisbane. The Pink-ball Test will be a crucial game for both teams, as the home side leads the series 1-0. England will be eager for a bounce back after a terrible loss in Perth.
As for Australia, they too have some concerns, specifically their opening slot. Even though Travis Head did exceptionally well in the last match, Usman Khawaja is still in contention. The Aussies will have to do some deliberation for the top spot.
