Australia is going strong on Day 2 of the second Test of the Ashes in Brisbane. After conceding 334 runs in the first innings, they came out with an intent to score as quickly as possible. Jake Weatherland set the tone, and Marnus Labuschagne continued.

However, Captain Steve Smith did not play with the attacking mindset. He, instead, tried to hold the fort at the other end. In the process, he also achieved a major record against England’s star pacer Jofra Archer.

Archer has conceded 100 runs against Smith without taking his wicket. He is only the fourth bowler against whom the 36-year-old has scored over 100 runs without being dismissed. Veerasammy Permaul (110 runs), Kraigg Brathwaite (113 runs), and Vernon Philander (125 runs) are the other players on the list.

Meanwhile, the 30-year-old got the important wicket of Weatherland, who was going strong in the innings, and also created a chance against Travis Head early in the innings. But the wicketkeeper Jamie Smith dropped the catch, giving the batter a revival.

Australia get a quick start in the Brisbane Test

Earlier in the game, Joe Root and Zak Crawley’s efforts helped England register a good total of 334 on the board. The former skipper scored a century (138 runs), which was his maiden Test ton in Australia, while Crawley scored 76 runs.

This was a much better effort from England compared to the last game, as they tried to stabilise the innings after early dismissals. Root was the man in charge for the visitors. In the last game, they were not patient enough to rebuild the innings after successive dismissals, which was one of the reasons they lost the match.

However, the home side came out with an intent to get past England’s total at the earliest. By the end of the second session on Day 2, Australia had already scored 228 runs for the loss of three wickets.
