India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill has been out of action from cricket since he sustained a back spasm against South Africa in the first Test of the two-match series. The injury forced him to sit out of the second Test against SA, followed by the entire ODI series against them.
In a recent line of developments, a report in RevSportz understands that ‘Shubman Gill has been declared fit for all formats after completing his rehab at CoE and meeting all the fitness criterias’.
Gill’s comeback also translates into the fact that he will be opening the Innings for India in the five-match T20I series against the Proteas, starting on Tuesday, December 9. The team will be led by Suryakumar Yadav.
Gill tempted to open in T20 WC, troublesome for Samson
The Indian team management will be eyeing this T20I series against South Africa as a major preparation for the upcoming home T20 World Cup in 2026. Which also means that the Indian think tank might look forward to creating a perfect squad and execute less number of experiments to avoid a chaos just before or in the prestigious cricket biennial.
Speaking of India’s squad for the five T20Is against SA, it was announced three days ago. The selectors appointed Gill as Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy for this series but his availability was subjected to the fitness test. However, in a sigh of relief, he is reportedly declared fit to feature against South Africa in the shortest format of the game.
India have already lost the Test series against SA by an embarrassing margin of 2-0, including the massive 408-run defeat in the second Test. Now, they will aim to beat the visitors in the upcoming five-match T20I assignment. On the other hand, they are also in action against the Proteas in Visakhapatnam in the third and last ODI of the three-match series.
