In a significant development, the BCCI has provided a massive update on Shreyas Iyer, who had left the field in the first innings after a nasty injury. The apex cricket board of India took to social media to disclose that the right-handed batter injured his ribs and was taken to the hospital for assessment.

For the unversed, Shreyas Iyer got injured after he took a brilliant backward running catch to dismiss Alex Carey. However, in the process, the Indian vice-captain landed badly and was in immense pain. Eventually, the physios assessed Iyer and took him out of the field.

There was uncertainty over Iyer's injury and whether he would walk to bat or not. However, the latest BCCI update states that Iyer has injured his rib and won't be able to bat in the ongoing match.

"Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury to his left rib cage while fielding. He has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation and assessment of his injury," read BCCI's statement.

It also marks the end of Shreyas Iyer's Australia tour as the right-handed batter is not part of India's T20I squad that follows up this series. Notably, Iyer has ample amount of time to rest as India's next ODI assignment is against South Africa which starts late November.

Shreyas' unfortunate tryst with injuries

Shreyas Iyer is having a hard time staying fit as the right-handed batter recently felt stiffness in his back domestic cricket that actually forced him to write to the BCCI about taking a break from red-ball cricket.

Iyer too has a delicate back and efforts of such kinds actually put his back to more risk. Fortunately for the right-handed batter, he only injured his rib and didn't damage his back.
