In a dramatic turn of events, experienced Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer hurt himself after completing a magnificent catch in the ongoing third ODI against Australia at Sydney Cricket Ground. Iyer took a spectacular running catch to dismiss Australia's key batter Alex Carey; however, the Mumbaikar injured himself while doing so and eventually went off the field.

Shreyas Iyer's catch leads to nasty injury

The incident occurred in the 34th over of the Australian innings when Alex Carey was steadily forming a valiant stand with Matt Renshaw following the dismissal of Matthew Short. After conceding five runs off the first three deliveries of his over, Indian pacer Harshit Rana bowled a back-of-length delivery, which Alex Carey tried to dispatch over the in-field with a fierce cut shot.

However, as Carey miscued it and the ball went high up in the air, Shreyas Iyer ran backwards and took a magnificent catch just outside the 30-yard circle. While Carey's dismissal elated India, inducing a loud cheer from their fans present in the crowd, the moment also stunned the visitors when Iyer fell flat on the ground right after completing the catch.

Shreyas Iyer's injury: How did it all happen?

After taking the catch and dismissing Carey, Shreyas Iyer got his knee stuck on the ground before landing awkwardly in the outfield. He experienced serious pain around his stomach region in the left side, as his teammates gathered to check his condition. The drinks break was taken following Carey's dismissal, while Iyer also left the field following the injury. As a result of his injury, Shreyas Iyer was struggling to walk, with the Indian team physio assisting him through to the dugout.

It's worth mentioning that Iyer has been prone to frequent injury setbacks in his brief career. The Indian cricketer missed plenty of action due to a shoulder injury in 2021 before being sidelined due to another back injury. Considering his importance for the Indian side, it will be a huge setback for the visitors if Iyer doesn't participate in the remainder of the third ODI.
