In a stunning turn of events, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson was dismissed for just 1 run during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 opener against Pakistan in Karachi, marking his first single-digit score in ODIs since January 2019.

The Black Caps’ talisman, renowned for his composure and consistency, fell cheaply to a sharp delivery by Naseem Shah, sending shockwaves through the Kiwi camp and igniting jubilation among Pakistani fans.

Naseem Shah Outfoxes Kane Williamson

The dismissal came in the 8th over of New Zealand’s innings. Naseem Shah, Pakistan’s pace spearhead, delivered a back-of-a-length ball angling into off-stump. Williamson, looking to defend off the backfoot, was undone by slight away movement after pitching.

The ball kissed the outside edge, and Mohammad Rizwan completed a sensational low catch, diving to his right. The umpire’s finger went up instantly, ending Kane Williamson’s brief stay at the crease.

Shah erupted in celebration, underscoring the significance of the breakthrough. His departure left New Zealand reeling at 40/2, shifting momentum firmly in Pakistan’s favour.

Pakistan Gains The Upper Hand Early

Opting to bowl first on a lively Karachi pitch, Pakistan’s pace trio of Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Haris Rauf struck early blows. Devon Conway (10 off 17) was the first to fall, clean-bowled by Abrar Ahmed’s sharp leg-break in the 8th over. Williamson’s dismissal moments later left the Kiwis in trouble at 40/2.

Opener Will Young has steadied the ship with a gritty knock while marching towards his fifty, blending caution with aggression. His five boundaries and a six have kept the scoreboard ticking, while Daryl Mitchell provides stubborn support.

With New Zealand’s power hitters yet to arrive, the next 10 overs could define the match. Pakistan, meanwhile, will rely on Abrar, Rauf and Naseem to tighten the screws.
