Kane Williamson's Heroics vs South Africa Propels Him Above Kohli In Rare List
Despite a prolonged absence from the format due to injury setbacks and sporadic appearances over the past year and a half, Williamson’s consistency has remained undiminished. Earlier in the tri-series, he had already showcased his form by scoring 58 against Pakistan, but his blockbuster knock against South Africa truly stole the limelight.
Williamson's innings featured 13 fours and two sixes, and he forged a vital 187-run partnership with Devon Conway for the second wicket. The match itself was a thrilling contest where the Proteas' debutant Matthew Breetzke also shattered records with his century.
In the match, South Africa set a formidable total of 304 in their 50 overs. New Zealand, in response, got off to a decent start by scoring 50 runs in the first 10 overs, although the loss of opener Will Young could have dampened their spirits.
Williamson Takes Charge, Thrashes Proteas
However, the momentum shifted dramatically when Williamson took charge, guiding his side to a successful run chase and etching his name in the record books. Interestingly, the ex-Kiwi skipper also ended the Fab 4's year-long drought with an ODI century after six long years.
As New Zealand celebrate their hard-fought victory, Williamson’s record-breaking knock propelled them to the final of Pakistan Tri Series 2025 where they will await their opponent as Pakistan and South Africa meet for the knockout match on February 12. The final will be played at the National Stadium in Karachi on February 14.
