Whether Australia spinner Matthew Kuhnemann would be allowed to bowl in international cricket or not will be known within a week. It is one of the several rapid developments around the left-arm spinners’ bowling action since his return from Sri Lanka.

Assuming Kuhnemann passes the test, he will be in contention for Australia’s tour of West Indies 2025. Even though the Aussies are scheduled to play ICC World Test Championship 2025 final before traveling to the West Indies, they are highly unlikely to field two spinners against South Africa at the Lord’s.

Matthew Kuhnemann Undergoes Bowling Test In Brisbane

The 28-year-old player underwent intense and technology-driven bowling tests at the National Cricket Centre, Brisbane. One of the ICC-affiliated centres for conducting such an assessment, a topless Kuhnemann bowled between 3-6 overs at the same speed as Sri Lanka as per the testing protocols.

If the ICC officials deem his bowling elbow to extend above the allowed limit of 15 degrees, Kuhnemann will be suspended from bowling at the highest level. If not, Kuhnemann can continue bowling without having to make any major changes to his bowling action. Supposing the fault lies with a particular delivery (which isn’t the case with Kuhnemann), a bowler can still be allowed to bowl, albeit without bowling that particular variation.

“Matthew has completed the assessment which was performed at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane. The ICC will make a determination in due course. Neither Cricket Australia nor Matthew will be making any public comment at this time,” Cricket Australia said in a statement.

For those who don’t know, Kuhnemann was handed this setback a week after laudable performance in the island nation. Highest wicket-taker in Australia’s 2-0 triumph in Sri Lanka, Kuhnemann is their second-highest wicket-taker in the last two Test series in the subcontinent.

In the meanwhile, Australia stand-in captain Steven Smith, former Test captain Tim Paine and Tasmania captain Jordan Silk have all lent support behind Kuhnemann believing that he will pass the test, which spanned over an hour, to continue bowling across formats.
